This win put them in the final to play Gippsland. In a very tight encounter it came down to one play with five minutes to go. Oliver Robinson made a break through Gippsland’s back line and with a 20+ metre strike managed to hit the back of the net with the goal keeper unable to keep the ball out.
The team erupted in celebration when the final whistle blew. Not only had they won the Karl Posselt Cup, it meant they had gone through the whole 2018 Rep season without losing a game, also winning the Branch Title and the Country Cup.
The team followed coach Jonathan (Jono) Wright’s first two rules; respect the opposition and each other and secondly have fun. They managed not to just win but showed outstanding sportsmanship along the way, something that stood them apart from the other teams.
Also, while the team had great individual performances through the tournament, it was the effort across the whole team that made the difference; not just relying on one or two players to win the game for them, every player put their best effort in to each game.
Jono’s admiration for his team is always so evident in how he interacts with his players and vice versa, along with the parents which have made this team such a united force. Before the final Jono asked his players too simply go out there and make some memories and they certainly did.
Team: Ciaran Craig-James, Oscar Hilkemeijer, Geoffrey Keenan, Daniel Morrison, Oliver Robinson, Cooper Treweeke, Jack Wheatley, Riley Field, Timothy Hopkins, Keiran Morris, Tommi Pesu, Darcy Sanders, Owen Waller, with Jonathon Wright as coach.
