On the first of September this year, which seems like only last week, some new rules come in to play for anyone wishing to drive on our roads.
There is an amendment to the road rules 2014.
Rule 78-1 was inserted.
“What does this insertion mean to me?” I hear you ask.
This new rule applies when a stationary emergency response vehicle (“the vehicle”) is on a road and is displaying a flashing blue or red light.
The rule requires drivers:
• To give way to any person who is on foot in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle.
• Not to drive past the vehicle at a speed exceeding 40 kilometres per hour.
• Not to increase speed when driving past the vehicle until they are at a sufficient distance from the vehicle so as to avoid causing a danger to any person in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle.
If you ignore this rule and you get caught you will be looking at a fine of 20 penalty units (1 penalty unit is $110) and you will also get three demerit points off your licence.
For your information, an emergency response vehicle is not just a police car.
An emergency response vehicle can be;
• The NSW Police Force.
• The Ambulance Service of NSW.
• Fire and Rescue NSW (including a fire brigade within the meaning of the Fire Brigades Act 1989).
• The NSW Rural Fire Service.
• The NSW State Emergency Service.
• The Authority (i.e. Roads and Maritime Services).
• The Transport Management Centre.
• The NSW Volunteer Rescue Association.
So there it is.
If you want to save money and save our emergency workers at the same time, take heed of this new law.
Remember that you can Dob in a Druggie any time you like by contacting Nowra Police or ringing Crime Stoppers.
As always, in case of an emergency call 000. In non-emergencies call the Policelink on 131 444 or your local police station. To provide anonymous information call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000. For domestic and family violence information, visit www.police.nsw.gov.au. For Shoalhaven Domestic Violence officers call 4421 9666 or 4421 9665 or email shoaldvlo@police.nsw.gov.au.
Don’t forget, cops are tops.
