From next year moving forward, AFL South Coast is planning to make its youth girls under 15s competition even bigger, after having six teams from the Wollongong Lions, Shellharbour Swans, Northern Districts Tigers, Port Kembla Eagles, Figtree Kangaroos and Albion Park Crows compete in 2018.
One team that is already preparing for a successful introduction to the field in 2019 are the Bomaderry Tigers, who have recently appointed Lyn Robinson as their coach.
“This under 15s team gives girls, who we might have previously lost to the sport, an opportunity to continue playing the sport they love,” Robinson said.
“It offers a clear pathway for athletes now – after they finish their Auskick and junior mixed competitions, they can play in this under 15s competition before integrating themselves into the club’s senior women’s team.
“It’s an exciting time.”
To be eligible to play, girls must be born in either 2004, 2005 or 2006, with games set to play played on Friday nights, at either Artie Smith Oval or at an Illawarra ground.
At this stage, Robinson and her team, which has 12 players confirmed for the 2019 season, will train once a week, on a Tuesday evening.
