The Shoalhaven Art Society opened its yearly exhibition on Saturday which was well supported by a healthy crowd of people.
Not only did people get the chance to see all the wonderful works but they also got to hear the announcment of all the winners in the various catergories.
The exhibition, at the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery in Nowra, is on display until September 8.
Society president Sandy McClellan got to announce the winners while vice president Patricia Wiltshire handed out the awards.
The winners were:
Contemporary Section A
First prize
Lisa Duncan - 'Nature's Frolic – Moonlit Seascape'
“A work whose elements float and trail in the wind; both elegant and fragile. Extraordinary balance and delicacy,” comment from a judge.
Second prize
Natalia Graham - 'Birth of Earth'
“A macrocosim and a microcosm at once; geological forms that can also appear as an aerial perspective of landscape below. Ambiguous and strong at the same time. A gem of a painting,” comment from a judge.
Highly commended – Fred Bullen – 'Tilba Memories'
“A nostalgic and warm painting that reminds us of a quiet and simple past. Evocative and very well painted,” comment from a judge.
Still Life - Section B
First prize - Mark Davis - 'Resurrection'
“Photoreal but luscious painting. A still life with vivid meaning - resurrection - blood red to dawning light. Excellent paint and tonal work - beautiful,” comment from a judge.
Second prize - Kim Grivas - "Little Green Jug'
“A still life of great refinement. Beautiful use of over painting with soft pinks left exposed under the tonal leaf treatment. A nostalgic and elegant work,” comment from a judge.

“Super tight composition lays the foundation for a sense of tension. A very dramatic backdrop for a detailed foreground,” comment from a judge.
Second prize - Philip Miles - ‘Mountain Path'
“Beautiful soft palette with finely calibrated tonalism. An apparently simple composition with an underlying complexity. I really want to see where that path leads,” comment from a judge.
Highly Commended – Neville Connor – 'Sofala Revisited'
“Great Aussie colours and sense of depth. A finely layered background leads to an open, loose foreground with directional lines,” comment from a judge.

First prize – Vivien Tanner- 'Autumn Light on the River Bank'
“Strong use of vertical and diagonal forms to create late afternoon light. Colours reflect the Australian bush, reminiscent especially of the Shoalhaven River,” comment from a judge.
Second prize - Martin Shaliapin - Coastal Turbulence'
“A muted palette interspersed with lively pattern-making. Dancing light draws the eye to beautiful foamy highlights,” comment from a judge.
