The Vincentia Sporting Complex, or Bomber Oval as it’s affectionately known, used to a mud patch.
However, grants from Veolia Mulwaree trust, Shoalhaven City Council, AFL and Cricket NSW meant much-needed drainage work was carried out on the oval.
The work was carried out last year and the Bay and Basin Bombers Junior Australian Football Club’s players are enjoying having a ground that is up to the same standard as others in the region.
$50,000 came from the Veolia Mulwaree Trust, $20,000 from the Australian Football League, $10,000 from Cricket NSW and $40,000 from Shoalhaven City Council.
Mayor of Shoalhaven City, Councillor Amanda Findlay, was joined by other councillors on Sunday at the ground, to unveil a plaque to acknowledge the groups who played a role in getting the drainage works done.
The oval is also used by the Vincentia Van Gogh Rugby Union Club in winter and the Bay and Basin Cricket Club in summer.
Bombers life members Chris Stubbs said the ground needed work.
“The funding from the Veolia Mulwaree Trust was an amazing boost and it contributed towards the costs of upgrading the ground which suffered terribly from poor drainage when we received even a small amount of rain,” he said.
“The ground was identified by the Shoalhaven City Council as one of the grounds in need of work.
“In the past, we have had large numbers of training sessions and games postponed or cancelled due to the inability to use the ground.
“It should also be noted that this ground is also used by a number of other sporting codes including cricket, rugby, soccer, and touch football and the NSW Cricket Association also put money towards the cost of the overall upgrade.
“The support means the ongoing use of this sporting ground for a large number of sports and residents of the Bay and Basin community will continue for years to come.
“We would like to thank the Veolia Mulwaree Trust for their generous donation and acknowledge the support of the other groups.”
Ms Stubbs said Bombers’ stalwart Phil Kennedy should be thanked for his tireless pursuit of the upgrade.
