Shoalhaven stars shine during representative carnival

THERE was no shortage of quality Australian Football played in the Shoalhaven from Friday to Sunday, when it once again hosted its annual junior representative carnival.

Teams from the Illawarra, Sapphire Coast and Central West descended on the region, to contest the under 13s, 15s and 17s boys age groups, while the Saints Blue, Saints Pink, Central West and Sapphire Stingrays contested the youth girls division.

The most successful of the Shoalhaven sides was the under 17s boys side, who reached the grand final.

On their way to the final, they lost 42-9 to Illawarra, before defeating both Sapphire Coast (59-33) and Central West (53-9).

Unfortunately, in the final, they couldn’t topple a red-hot Illawarra side, going down 9.10-64 to 1.3-9.

The Shoalhaven’s under 15s and 13s sides finished third and fourth in their respective competitions.

In their four matches, the Shoalhaven under 15s lost to Illawarra 66-nil, defeated Central West 60-8, lost to Sapphire Coast 20-16 and defeated Central West 9.4-58 to 4.6-30.

The under 13s lost 42-3 Illawarra, defeated Central West 25-24 and lost to Sapphire Coast 53-20 before losing to Central West 6.2-38 to 1.4-10.

Across the three days, which saw games played at Artie Smith Oval, the Nowra Showground and West Street Oval, the under 13s boys and under 15 boys were both taken out by Illawarra, with Sapphire Coast taking out the youth girls – who defeated Central West (6.4-40 to 1.1-7) in the decider.
