Wright had continued his strong form in 2018 by progressing through rounds two, three and four with ease.
But the Culburra Beach Boardrider was no match for United States’ Griffin Colapinto in heat two of round five.
Wright’s two wave combined score of 10.10 was not to claim victory, with Colapinto managing 14.27 – to set up a quarter-final with Australian Wade Carmichael.
The 21-year-old Wright will now prepare the Corona Open J-Bay (South Africa), from July 2-13, where he has received his fourth wildcard of the season, thanks to him being seventh in the world rankings currently.
