In 2017, Pelican Rocks Cafe was crowned best fish and chip shop in NSW at the inaugural Australian Fish and Chips Awards.
With this years judging fast approaching, Pelican Rocks Cafe owner Sam Cardow is hoping to reel in another win.
“We really wanted to win last year but were very shocked when we actually did,” Mr Cardow said.
“We would love to take it out again this year.”
A mystery panel of judges will visit fish and chip shops around the country incognito, before making a judgement on the taste, service, presentation, choice and information available at each eatery.
Those fish and chip shops that win the state title will then battle it out for national victory.
“It would mean the world to win the Australian title not only for me, but for the staff as well,” Mr Cardow said.
“They are an amazing team, they are great with customers and know exactly what they’re doing.”
Mr Cardow has been running Pelican Rocks Cafe for the past eight years and said last year’s win had brought a whole lot of new customers to Greenwell Point.
“We’ve definitely noticed a lot of people from places like Canberra, Bowral and Sydney driving down for some fish and chips,” he said.
“It’s not just good for us but good for the whole Shoalhaven.”
Mr Cardow said the key to great fish and chips was undoubtedly fresh produce, as well as a few tips from mum.
“Mum’s been cooking seafood for more than 30 years and I wouldn’t be able to do it without her fantastic training,” he said. “Clean oil and good presentation are key things too.”
Mr Cardow said the fan favourites at Pelican Rocks Cafe were the blackfish, flathead fish cocktails and the leather jacket.
“The chips we use are beer battered and they seem to be the favourite with everyone,” he said.
People’s choice voting will begin on August 1 and close on September 15. Winners will be announced October 15.
“We are pretty excited to be part of the awards again and I hope we get another great result,” Mr Cardow said.
