South Coast MP Shelley Hancock announced that $4 million was secured in the 2018/19 state budget, handed down today.

Mrs Hancock said the funding would assist Shoalhaven City Council to upgrade key sections of local roads and help keep motorists and pedestrians safer.

The funding will improve safety at nine locations in the region.

“It’s important to remember that not only have lives been lost on the Princes Highway but also on a number of our local roads that experience high volumes of traffic or dangerous driving conditions,” Mrs Hancock said.

“Some of these sections of road soon to be upgraded have seen from three to six casualty crashes over a five-year period.

“Even one life lost is too many which is why the NSW Government is acting to deliver record amounts of funding to improve safety and save lives.

Mrs Hancock said funding would cover safety infrastructure such as rumble strips, pedestrian crossings, roadside guardrails, barriers, road sealing and widening, roundabouts and improved signage as well as clearing and hazard removal.

The $4 million for local road improvements in this year’s state budget follows announcements that more than $10 million allocated to improve safety on the Princes Highway and $1.5 billion for major upgrades along the Princes Highway including the $155 million Nowra Bridge replacement, $250 million Batemans Bay replacement, $450 million Berry to Bomaderry upgrade and $630 million Albion Park Rail bypass.
