Tyler and Mikey Wright claim third at Uluwatu CT

CULBURRA Beach siblings Owen, Tyler and Mikey Wright have all fallen just short of claiming their respective titles at the Uluwatu CT, the make up event for stop number three on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.

The iconic left-hander dished up pumping 4-to-6 foot (1.4 - 2 metre) waves for the final day of competition, that started running just after sunrise and saw the final siren sound moments before the sunset.

The title assaults of by Tyler and Mikey were ended in the semi-final stage by eventual winners Johanne Defay (France) and Willian Cardoso (Brazil).

Both six-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (Australia) and reigning, two-time WSL Champion Tyler Wright bowed out with equal third place finishes – which sees Wright move into fourth spot of the leaderboard.

On his way to the final, Cardoso needed to overcome the rampant wildcard Mikey Wright (13.77 to13.16 in the semi-final), who continued his history-making run at the elite level, finishing equal third at the Uluwatu CT.

All year, Wright has been known for big upsets against top seeds, and he continued the trend today by taking down 2014 WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (Brazil).

Wright now sits at seventh on the leaderboard and is in good stead to qualify for the 2019 CT as a full-time competitor.

Earlier in the day, Owen Wright was sent packing in round four, after losing to Kolohe Andino (United States) and Jordy Smith (South Africa).
