Tylan Burns, 23, was on parole at the time and pleaded with arresting officers not to charge him as he would “go to jail”.
In Nowra Local Court on Monday, Burns pleaded guilty to larceny and two driving offences.
Court papers said just after 10am on January 25 this year he stole almost $14 worth of confectionery from the Coles Supermarket in Nowra.
His haul included a packet of strawberry Mentos, a Bounty, a chunky Kit Kat, a Mars bar and Oreo chocolate bars, a packet of sour lollies and a chocolate Oak flavoured milk.
A supermarket security guard spotted Burns acting suspiciously and witnessed him place the items down his pants and in his pockets before leaving the store through the Liquorland exit.
The guard contacted police and followed Burns, who was spotted by nearby plain clothes officers.
A chase started, heading north on Kinghorne Street and through the adjacent Woolworths supermarket.
As police chased, Burns threw a packet of lollies and the flavoured milk at officers before being arrested in the car park near Jellybean Park.
He asked officers if they “were seriously going to charge him” as “he “was on parole” and would “go to jail.”
“It’s a supermarket, they have enough,” he told officers.
Burns also pleaded guilty to taking a car without permission and driving while disqualified following incidents in Wollongong in July last year.
Magistrate Michael Stoddart sentenced Burns to 12 months’ jail with a non-parole period of four months.
With time served he will be eligible for release on May 24.
