Membership at Berry Probus Club was dwindling, and outgoing president Ian Tompson realised it was time to embrace change.

“We had to get with the times and invite women along,” he said.

“We’re not men and women, we’re human beings. I copped a lot of flak for it, but it has lifted our membership by 15 members. It will bring fresh ideas, and probably clean up our jokes.”

On Tuesday at the annual changeover lunch, women were inducted, including Joyce Kenny, the first female committee member.

Joyce was a Probus club member on the Central Coast before she moved to Berry. She brings her sense of humour, and organisational skills to the club.

“I grew up with three brothers, so I’m not worried about blokes pushing me around,” she said.
