How about the finer points of good beard and moustache design?
If all this has piqued your interest, perhaps it’s time take a short course in barbering.
Nowra barber and hairdresser Matt Whitaker is in no doubt there is a boom in barbering.
As a hairdresser, he added a barber service about a year ago.
Then, he was using a tub of shaving soap and 200 shaving blades per month. Now, he’s using that same amount per week.
“Guys love getting freshened up and feeling nice,” he said.
“It’s great to see them leave the shop and put up photos of their new look on Instagram.”
Joining the barbering bandwagon can be quick.
Through a TAFE NSW short course you will be snipping, shaving and fading like a champion in just weeks.
For anyone considering a career change or to add another service to their existing hairdresser business, TAFE NSW teacher of barbering and hairdressing Mark Cole believes now is a prime time to get skilled in the craft.
“The exciting thing is that demand for qualified employees is not only high, but there are opportunities aplenty,” Mr Cole said.
As well as the barber shop renaissance, Mr Cole is seeing hairdressing salon owners encouraging staff to undertake training, so they can offer an in-house barber service.
A TAFE NSW short course is a great way to get job-ready skills for a career in barbering or for building on current skills to expand your career.
TAFE NSW barbering courses cover men’s haircuts, beard trim, head shaving, hair carving and tattooing (where lines and designs are shaved into the hair), brow trimming, and beard and moustache design.
After 10 years in the hairdressing industry Mr Whitaker is glad he made the move to barbering.
“My clientele has flipped. It has gone from 80 per cent women to 70 or 80 per cent men,” Mr Whitaker said.
“It’s pure haircuts. What you see is what you get. Oh, and I love a good mo, everyone loves a good mo.”
