One car, a blue sedan with a 59-year-old man at the wheel, collided with a power pole on King Street about 10.30pm.
The second car came to rest on its roof, with a 19-year-old man trapped inside.
Early reports provided to paramedics indicated the teen driver was not fully conscious and was trapped by the car's wreckage.
Both drivers were transported by ambulance to Wollongong Hospital, where they remain on Tuesday in a stable condition.
Four ambulance units responded to the emergency.
The collision caused the closure of King Street in both directions between Five Islands Road and Cowper Street.
The traffic signals at King St and Five Islands Rd were blacked out as a result of at the power wires being brought down.
