The former general manager of the South Coast Correctional Centre, Ian Farquhar, died suddenly on Sunday (March 4), aged 58.

Mr Farquhar was the Director of Custodial Corrections in the southern region, overseeing prison operations at South Coast, Goulburn, Cooma, Lithgow, Oberon, Bathurst, Kirkconnell, Mannus and Berrima correctional centres and the Illawarra Reintegration Centre.

He has been described as a much loved and respected member of the Corrective Services NSW family,

CSNSW Acting Commissioner Luke Grant said his death was a great loss to the organisation and would be mourned by many staff across the state.

“Ian was talented, generous and a true gentleman in spirit,” Mr Grant said.

“He devoted his working life to corrections and after almost 40 years' service was due to retire very shortly.

“I had the privilege of working very closely with Ian from the early ’90s and had an enormous amount of respect for him as a colleague and friend.

“He was considerate and fair to both staff and inmates and exemplified all of the best characteristics of a correctional officer.

“I would like to express my deepest condolences to Ian's family and to everyone in CSNSW who knew him.”

Mr Farquhar joined CSNSW in April 1981 and became Manager of Classification and Placement 11 years later.
