His wife, Ann, has been overwhelmed by the community’s outpouring of love on social media and in person.
“I’d like to thank everybody for all their thoughts, we’re just overwhelmed by the support,” Mrs Ward said.
“The Sanctuary Point community has been amazing.”
In a statement issued by the school on Tuesday, the community sent its condolences to the family of the long-serving principal.
“Sanctuary Point Public School and the Education Department were very sad to learn that recently retired principal, Jeff Ward, passed away unexpectedly yesterday,” the statement said.
“He was much loved and respected by his colleagues, staff, students and people in the wider school community.
“Our deepest thoughts and sympathies are with his family at this very difficult time.”
Teachers were informed of his death this morning, and students were told about his passing in an age-appropriate way.
Staff and students have been supported with additional school counsellors.
This support will also be available for the rest of this week and next week as required.
On Wednesday, the principal who often wore a tie, was remembered by Sanctuary Point school students, who wore ties to school in his memory.
Some community members lit a candle for him on Tuesday night, others laid flowers at the school gate, showing how they had been deeply touched by the tragic loss of Mr Ward.
The family knows and appreciates that Jeff was a muchloved character in the community, however in keeping with his wishes no funeral will be held.
