The Bay and Basin community hub planned for Vincentia included a huge, two-storey library, and residents were concerned the Sanctuary Point library would be scrapped accordingly.
Instead, council will no longer pursue a library as part of Draft Bay and Basin Master plan
Shoalhaven Councillor Bob Proudfoot urged his colleagues to focus community resources towards Sanctuary Point, where the library is already thriving.
“A two storey library in a sporting precinct is an extravagance,” Cr Proudfoot said at the ordinary council meeting on Tuesday night.
“The Bay and Basin plan will cost $30-40 million dollars we don’t really have, at the expense of the things that have been put on hold for far too long.
“Let's build a district library where the population is, it makes better planning sense.”
A number of Sanctuary Point residents who attended the meeting clapped when Cr Proudfoot finished speaking.
The motion that passed council asks staff to:
1. Defer consideration of the Draft Bay and Basin Hub Master Plan until council receives a report back on other staging options excluding the district library
2. Prepare an application for a District Library at Sanctuary Point
