Even more rare, is when you get to play in the same team as your wife and son.
But that will be the case on Saturday at the Bomaderry Sporting Complex, when Brad Page, 46, lines up for the Berry-Shoalhaven Heads fourth grade side alongside wife Linda, 46, and son Christian, 13.
“I’ve never really heard of anything like this happening before, especially as most sports don’t allow males and females to take the field together,” Brad Page, from Coolangatta, said.
“As such, it’s a real thrill and honour for my family.”
Our research would back up Page’s thoughts, with nothing like this happening in the recent history of the Shoalhaven District Cricket Association.
Brad and Christian have played together all season for the Magpies – in which the pair have been involved in a number of dismissals together.
“This season has been fantastic – I’ve been looking forward for some time now to being able to play with my son Christian,” Brad said.
“Before this year, I hadn’t played in 34 years but it’s be fun making a comeback alongside him.
“It’s the most worthwhile thing I’ve ever done.”
But this Saturday will be the first time Linda has taken the field.
“Linda played cricket for a long time when she was younger but hasn’t played in close to 20 years,” Brad said.
“At the start of the season, we got Linda to put her name down in case we were short one week.
“Since then, Christian and I have been secretly hoping we would be short one week, just so Linda could play.
”It was really exciting when we found out she finally got the call-up.
“We can’t wait till Saturday – it’s going to be one of the highlights of my life.”
The family affair could even extend to four if Brad’s youngest son Matthew takes to the field – as he did as a substitute fielder last week.
“Matthew will be there and I’ll be telling him to take his whites just in case,” Page said.
“If that were to happen, it would make the experience even more special.”
Brad and Christian are just one of three father and son combinations in the Magpies line-up, with Scott Dobson, Hugh and Alec Dobson and Aaron and Cooper Bramley also in the side.
“The whole competition has been great, with it being very well natured across all the teams,” Brad said.
“It’s been great to see the fun and banter between all the older and younger players in the competition.”
There is a history of family affairs for the Page’s, with Brad playing football for Shoalhaven Heads/Berry with his eldest son Tom previously.
