A rescue in Jervis Bay took a dramatic turn on Tuesday afternoon, when a private vessel used to rescue a swimmer in trouble 200m off Huskisson, capsized in choppy conditions.
Police received a call around 1.40pm that a swimmer was in distress off White Sands Beach at Huskisson.
Initial reports police received said three people were in difficulty.
Police from Huskisson attended the scene, spotting a man about 200m offshore, clinging to a buoy.
Officers requested assistance from Marine Rescue Jervis Bay and the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter from Moruya.
Two police officers, a female sergeant and male senior constable, sought the assistance of a member of the public who was launching his 4.5m fiberglass vessel at Woollamia Boat Ramp to help in the rescue.
The officers managed to recover the male swimmer but shortly after the vessel experienced fuel line problems and in the choppy sea conditions due to a strong northeasterly wind, started taking on water.
The vessel eventually capsized with all four people being thrown into the water.
The rescue helicopter arrived on the scene at the same time, but all four managed to swim safely to shore, uninjured.
Police would like to thank the boat owner for providing assistance in the emergency situation and will be working with him to recover the vessel.
