The pick of the bunch was 16-year-old Sam Taylor, who competed in five events across the three-day event at Sydney’s Olympic Park Athletic Centre – claiming bronze in both the under 16 triple and long jump.
“Going into both the triple jump and long jump, I was confident that I could finish in the top three, knowing some of the competitors from previous meets and backing my own ability,” Taylor said.
“In the last round, I was pushed back into fourth spot until I managed to jump 12.88m, a personal best of mine and moved into the bronze by just 1cm.
“Then in the long jump, I missed out on a gold medal by just 6cms, jumping a 6.44m.”
Taylor also ran in both the 100m and 200m while placing seventh in the javelin with a personal best of 44m.
Other students that competed include; Lily Wheeler (eighth in 14 girls 100m), Rebecca Miles (ninth in 17+ girls pentathlon), Jasper Charlesworth (fourth in 13 boys 200m heat), Ben Ezbery (fourth in 400m heat), Thomas Power (javelin) and Natalie Went (shot put and javelin).
Taylor is now preparing for the NSW All-School event to be held from October 12-15, again at Sydney Olympic Park, where he will be competing in the long jump, triple jump and javelin.
