The Corey Ryan coached team courageously lost the final 2-1 to Woollooware High School at Sutherland’s Seymour Shaw Park on Wednesday.
“We knew this was going to be our toughest game heading into it,” Vincentia High School teacher/coach Corey Ryan said.
“They had a couple excellent players that were fast and experienced, including one player that had represented the Australian under 17s side.”
Heading into the match, Ryan’s side hadn’t conceded a goal from open play, with the only goal being scored against them being from the penalty spot – but that all changed quickly in the final.
“Woollooware scored first on the back of a through ball that caught us off guard,” Ryan said.
“That goal kicked us into gear, as we started to play free flowing football and dominated possession which lead to us scoring with five mins to go in the first half.
“A well executed free kick from our inspirational captain Rhianna Brown fell to Maddy Moffatt, who sweetly struck the ball with her left foot into the bottom right hand corner.
“In the second half, the ball fell to their Australian representative player, who burst through the wing and scored a good counter attacking goal.
“After that, we were ruthless with our attack and absolutely played them off the park tactically.
“Their goalkeeper pulled off a number of great saves, to keep their lead in tact.
“We were outstanding and I could not fault the girls efforts as we were the better team but unfortunately that ball didn't go into the back of the net.”
Despite the result, Ryan couldn’t be prouder of his whole squad – who won $1000 from Puma to go towards jumpers for the players.
“357 schools entered the competition and to say we are the second best in the state is something to be very proud of,” he said.
“They bring nothing but positive vibes and were still laughing on the bus on the way home despite the loss.
“Another positive is Maddy Moffatt being named player of the series – which is incredible.”
Ryan praised the efforts his goalkeeper Bianca Pool, who let in just two goals during their nine matches, captain Rhianna Brown, Emily Laing and Matilda Cockrem, all main stays in the team for a number of years, who have all played their last games for the school side.
