RISING Shoalhaven football player Jake Trew is learning a powerful lesson - you have to take the good with the bad when it comes to sport.
The 17-year-old Vincentia High Student is now hobbling around on crutches, following a serious knee injury.
Jake was on a sporting high over the past 12 months, which was capped off with selection in Australian side to tour England earlier this year.
He won’t be heading over to England anytime soon to play football.
The star striker was recently playing for the South Coast open side in the semi-finals of the Combined High Schools tournament in Griffith when he heard and felt something bad.
“I was running to press the opposition’s centre back, went for a lunge and when my foot landed. I felt a pop in the back of right knee,” he said.
He knew straight away things were not good.
“There was a fair bit of pain with the knee and I could not got on,” he said.
The knee was put on ice and he received treatment from sports trainer on the sideline.
“At that stage we just could not tell what the injury was,” he said.
After a six hour drive back to the Shoalhaven to see his doctor and a MRI confirmed the worst - a snapped anterior cruciate.
“I need and operation and it means 12 months on the sideline,” he said.
The upcoming operation will be done in Sydney by a specialist recommended by the officials from the Wollongong Wolves - Jake’s club team.
Jake, knowing youth is on his side, is trying to remain confident.
“I am pretty annoyed but injuries are something that happens in sport,” he said.
“I am determined to get back on the field and want to make a speedy recovery.”
There is one good thing about the injury but Jake might disagree.
As a year 12 student he will now have more time to study - so hit the books Jake.
