Mr Ward said he was looking forward to the challenge of the new position.
“As a strong supporter of our Gonski education reforms, I look forward to making a real difference for students and teachers in NSW,” Mr Ward said.
“As a proud product of public education, I want to use this role to ensure that students in today’s classrooms have every opportunity to reach their full potential.
“Having been a student with a disability, I look forward to being a strong advocate for students that are walking the same path I did. I want them to know that they can be all they want to be. “
He said regional universities make a huge difference in country communities, not just in terms of access to education but also jobs and economic activity.
“I look forward to working closely with regional universities in particular to ensure they have a voice at the heart of government,” Mr Ward said.
Mr Ward will retain his existing responsibilities for the Illawarra and South Coast.
Education Minister Rob Stokes welcomed Mr Ward’s new role saying he was excited to be working closely to focus on improving teaching and learning, and creating great education facilities to serve the growing number of students across NSW.
“Gareth is a close friend and valued colleague and brings great energy and dedication to our work in building an even better education system for future generations,” Mr Stokes said.
