Ward was the race winner in the open elite A grade race over 45 minutes on the Waratah Park circuit where Coghlan finished fifth.
This event was preceded by the open elite B grade where Jade Colligan lined up with just enough time to register and have her bike tyres pumped up after the drive from Nowra.
Colligan rode on or near the front of the field throughout the 35 minutes event and along the way won two sprint primes.
The rain started with five minutes remaining and in the hectic scramble to the finish Jade crossed the line in fifth position.
The A grade event went on with light rain continuing and an aggressive race developed.
Coghlan was in the early moves and was showing his colours at the head of the bunch and in early breakaways.
Ward joined Coghlan in a move to ride away from the field but the chase bunch had it all together with 20 minutes remaining.
At this point the rain and wet roads along with a high speed saw the field split up with five riders moving ahead with this group including both Ward and Coghlan.
This lead group split again as they raced into the final five minutes and Ward won the race by half a wheel from team ultra rider Ben Metcalfe.
Coghlan was to finish fifteen seconds later in fifth position.
Twilight criteriums continue on the circuit at Waratah Park, Sutherland throughout the daylight savings period.
