Mr Payne was one of the guests of honour at Diggers Day event on Saturday at Rugby Park and he met the players from both sides.
He grabbed each of them in his normal two-handed shake, shared a word or a joke.
“How is the weather up there,” he asked one of the taller Shoals players.
The event marked Tui Aberahama’s 200th game for the Shoals and he played well.
Diggers Day was a joint Nowra RSL Sub-Branch and rugby club event and this year the day raised money goes to DefenceCare and the Nowra RSL Sub-Branch, to allow its continued support of local veterans.
