For those who have been following Dami Im’s seemingly overnight success, her X Factor season five win and her success at this year’s Eurovision song contest would be old news.
But underneath the glamour and hype is a woman who is determined to keep her focus clearly on what’s most important.
After performing in what might be the largest scale production of its kind in the world, 27-year-old South-Korean born Australian entrant Dami Im defied the advice of Eurovision music industry stalwarts and headed straight to the slums of Uganda to visit one of her eight sponsored children around the world.
“Everyone said I should try to capitalise on my Eurovision success by holding concerts around Europe but for me it was the perfect opportunity to bring attention to how sponsoring a child can be life-changing,” she said.
She said it was “heartbreaking” to see impoverished children like Jovia, 6, living in slums and running around sewers. However, she did see hope through the work charities like Compassion do by creating opportunities for kids to get an education and “break the cycle of poverty”.
"If I don't remind myself of more important things in the world then I feel like I'm capable of just diving into that world of wanting to get more and achieve more."
“There has obviously been the need to adjust to a new lifestyle but for me it’s been very important to try to keep the balance and stay true to who I am and why I’m doing what I’m doing,” she added.
For her new tour, Yesterday Once More, Dami will be performing songs from her new album Classic Carpenters.
