That’s the promise of Local Government NSW President Keith Rhoades.
LGNSW is the peak industry body for councils and is responsible for an annual conference, which will be held in Wollongong this year, on October 16-18.
But with the merger of Wollongong and Shellharbour still on the cards, it’s quite likely that come October, there will be administrators and not elected councillors in charge of the city.
However, Cr Rhoades would still be happy to see Wollongong councillors – or those from any of the other sacked councils – turn up to the conference.
“The LGNSW Annual Conference is, and has always been, an open conference – anyone who is interested in the future of local government can register to attend,” Cr Rhoades said.
“There are certainly no rules prohibiting the attendance of the mayors and councillors so brutally sacked last week or who may be sacked in the future.”
Local Government Minister Paul Toole was asked to comment on the issue of the local government conference in Wollongong without an elected council.
“The interests of ratepayers and the wider community will guide the Government’s decisions, not the demands of the local government sector,” a spokesman for Mr Toole said.
