However, the company won’t confirm the rumours.
Since Woolworths announced the unfinished 13,134 square metre South Nowra Masters store would not open, speculation has been rife as to what businesses might move in.
In less than 24 hours it is understood at least four multinational companies, Costco, Amart, either sports or furniture, The Good Guys and Big W, expressed an interest in the site.
Speculation The Good Guys were set to be one of the business to move into the store strengthened when the electrical outlet confirmed its South Nowra store would temporarily close on February 7, while securing and developing a new location in Nowra following the end of its lease at the current site in Central Avenue.
In a statement The Good Guys said it remained committed to the Nowra community and its 22 employees would remain employed and continue to support and service the local community through The Good Guys website and The Good Guys Warrawong store.
The Good Guys public relations manager, Cathy Rennie-Matos said the company was currently in commercial discussions over a number of locations.
“At this stage we are not in a position to comment on those discussions which are private and ongoing,” she said.
Likewise, Woolworths would not comment on who might have expressed interest in the South Nowra site but said it was expected the building would be finished mid year.
A spokesperson said it was too early to be definitive about what would happen at South Nowra and other sites.
Woolworths would not confirm if establishing a Big W store at the site was an option but the company, through Masters, has a lease on the property for 15 years.
There are suggestions Woolworths may keep the leasing arrangement and sub-lease out to other companies. It is believed the building could be divided with a number of tenants, maybe even as many as eight may be housed in the complex.
It is understood the soon to be vacant Good Guys store will be the new home of Spotlight, which is relocating from the Nowra CBD.
The Register understands Spotlight’s Nowra lease will expire in coming months.
