Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Marine Park Acting Manager, Justin Gilligan, urged local anglers to ensure they knew the rules before heading out on the waterways.
“DPI Fisheries officers have been out in force this summer and have spoken to some anglers not doing the right thing,” Mr Gilligan said.
“Over the recent festive break, officers spoke with 30 people between Tollgates and Brush Islands for fishing in sanctuary zones on one day, which is prohibited.
“Similarly, 20 people were caught fishing with bait in the Montague Island (Inner) Habitat Protection Zone, which is restricted between November 1 and April 30 due to the seasonal occurrence of grey nurse sharks.
“We encourage local anglers to be prepared and take note of some important information about fishing in this area to ensure they have an enjoyable time.
“Become familiar with your location via the Marine Park Zoning Map, know and understand fishing rules for the area and ensure you hold a valid fishing licence.”
The Marine Park Zoning Map identifies the rules and regulations that apply in the area intended to fish.
You can download the free Avenza PDF Maps App using the iTunes Store or Google Play, and once installed, download the desired marine park map to see exactly where you are in the marine park.
“We really want anglers and all park visitors to enjoy their time in the park, but make sure they know the rules before getting started,” Mr Gilligan said.
All anglers must carry a recreational fishing fee receipt, or proof of exemption, with them at all times and follow the general recreational fishing rules that apply across NSW, including fishing gear restrictions, size and bag limits.
Information regarding any of the fishing rules is widely available from DPI offices, bait and tackle stores, tourist information centres, or visit:
