The champion Nowra High School discus thrower booked her place in the final with an equal personal best throw of 48.14 metres.
“It felt amazing in the qualifications, but the best is to come,” Sam said.
At the halfway point in the final she was in 10th spot but she stood up to be counted.
She threw over 50 metres for the first time in her athletic career and the 17-year-old was in third spot with three throws to go.
She maintained her form to take the bronze medal.
