Last year there were 80 fires in the Shoalhaven spanning 500 hectares, including 11 illegal fires.
Volunteers also attended 24 structural fires.
NSW Rural Fire Service superintendant Mark Williams said there was an urgent need for people to prepare for bushfires going into summer.
“This bushfire season is shaping up to be a challenging one for the Shoalhaven area,” he said.
“Unfortunately weather conditions are again pointing to a long hot, dry summer and the threat of bushfires is very real.
“The time to act is now, not when a fire is at your front door.
“You dramatically improve your chances of surviving a devastating bushfire and saving your home by doing a few simple things such as cleaning out your gutters, trimming overhanging branches and understanding the fire danger ratings.”
From Saturday, October 18 to Sunday, October 19 volunteers will be set up at Bunnings, South Nowra to help locals with their survival plans.
