MORE than 200 people braved a chilly winter’s evening to spend the night under the stars and raise money for the homeless on Saturday night.
Organiser Mark Emerton said he was happy with the turnout, saying the inaugural Sleep Out Shoalhaven raised between $12,000 and $15,000.
“It was pretty good for our first night – we were lucky with the weather,” said Mr Emerton.
Both the commanding officers of HMAS Albatross and HMAS Creswell spent the night sleeping on the lawn outside the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre, alongside local business people and South Coast Register journalists Adam Wright and Rob Crawford.
The event was popular with local teenagers, many of whom took the opportunity to stay up all night.
While the temperature dropped to a balmy 9 degrees, Mr Emerton is considering the warmer month of November for next year’s event.
