The Nowra Velo Club will have a women’s team on the start line for the first time.
This year the Nowra Velo Club’s womens rep, Mel Kilby made a push to put together a women’s team for this championship series and has gathered a team of masters women who have been training together over the past month as they prepare for next Saturday.
Along with Mel there is Michelle Harris, Kate Darke and Kim Waters.
All of these women have been racing in time trials, scratch races and handicap races this year with the Nowra Velo Club.
All are in teams within the 2014 MIE teams challenge series and Kate is in the Optus Nowra team which are the leaders this series.
Mel Kilby is the more experienced of the quartet having raced state and national masters events and has medals from both levels.
Michelle Harris has been racing with the NVC for four years and has won her way into the clubs C grade with two wins this year on the tough Flinders Estate circuit.
Both Kate Darke and Kim Waters have a triathlon background and while this is Kate’s third year with the Nowra Velo Club, Kim is a newcomer to road racing having just joined up for 2014.
The team has been getting together up to three mornings each week regardless of the weather, and practising their team work.
This team is entered in the masters womens all age category and will race over 40 kilometres in next Saturday’s championship.
The Nowra Velo Club also have two masters men’s teams entered on the program.
Lawrence Schinella will lead the northern Nowra Velo team where he will ride alongside Brendon Miller, Frank Neri and Mark Bagnall while Dion Carter leads Peter Kastelien, Tim Devlin and Scott Barrett in the Nowra Velo’s southern team.
