Bomaderry 4
St Georges Basin nil
BOMADERRY coach Doug Foley said his team played the best first half all year to have St Georges Basin 3-nil at half-time of the teams’ clash at St Georges Basin Sorting Complex on Saturday.
But Basin once again proved they should not be taken lightly, and came out firing in the second half to restrict the Bomaderry attack to just one goal, leaving the score at 4-nil at the full-time whistle.
“The first half for us was very good. I couldn’t ask for much better really,” Foley said.
Bomaderry’s made their mark in the first few minutes of the match when a free kick to Ben Foley near the corner of the 18 yard box caught the Basin keeper off guard.
Foley drove the ball low and hard directly at the keeper, and when the ball was fumbled, Cameron Nelson made no mistake after placing himself in prime position to boot it home.
About 10 minutes later Daniel Frew found himself with the ball just outside the 18 yard box, stepped past a couple of Basin defenders to the middle of the goal mouth and found the back of the net to make it 2-nil to Bomaderry.
But the Bomaderry forwards of Michael Hampton and Cameron Nelson were not done yet.
The two worked together to leave Hampton right in close scoring range to make it 3-nil going into the break.
“The whole team played well. I couldn’t have asked for a better first half from the guys,” Foley said.
“But in the second half we expected Basin to come back – because they always do.”
Aldridge said that it was poor start from the Basin team.
“I was not happy and the boys knew that from the half-time talk,” he said.
“We were down 3-nil at the break after easy goals were conceded once again.”
Aldridge’s half-time team talk surely paid off as they came out firing in the second half to take the shine off the well oiled Bomaderry machine.
Both teams had plenty of chances, but Bomaderry’s Dave Hampton was lucky to finish one off late in the second half to make it 4-nil at the full-time whistle.
“We weathered the storm in the second half and in the last 15 minutes we had a number of opportunities, but there are definitely things for me to work on this week in training,” Foley said.
“Credit to Scott Aldridge. He did change things up for us at half-time and it did make a big difference on the second half. It was a really hard-fought game played in good spirits.”
Although Foley said he could not fault any player in the first half, he did have some standout performers.
“Dave Hampton had an absolute blinder. He was everywhere. We were missing Matt Kellett in the midfield so moved Dave up from the back and he was very good,” he said.
“Carik Taylor from second grade stepped up to play in the backs. It was his first start in first grade and he did a fine job.
“The two forwards up front, Mick Hampton and Cameron Nelson, worked tirelessly all day, and the midfielders Daniel Frew, Dave Hampton and Doug Foley, and the backs Blake Munilla and Brad Bailey put in a big effort all game.”
Aldridge said a win can’t be too far away if Basin continues to lift each game.
“Once we find the attitude to play for a full 90 minutes our long awaited win will happen,” he said.
“But I would like to congratulate third grade and second grade after they both won. That was the first win for seconds for well over 15 months.”
Next round Bomaderry will play United at Bomaderry Oval, whereas Basin will play an away game against Huskisson.
