The Bulldogs backed up their 2013 premiership success by winning the Tom Smith Memorial Trophy at Tom Smith Oval last Saturday.
They defeated the Port Kembla Blacks, 52-24 in the final, after accounting for Bomaderry 46-9 and Nowra 69-12 earlier in the day.
The competition gave teams a great chance to have a hit out before the start of the 2014 competition, in very hot conditions, not commonly seen during the footy season.
Local teams had mixed success, with Bomaderry and Nowra having a win and a loss, while the Albatross Demons were beaten in both their games.
Nowra and Albatross kicked off the day, with the Blues running away with the game 50-8.
Bomaderry slipped up in the first game against the Bulldogs, before thrashing Albatross in their second game 88-6.
The first round of the season kicks off tonight with a local derby between the Nowra Blues and Bomaderry Tigers at West Street Oval at 6.30pm.
Kiama Power kick off their campaign against Northern Districts at Bonaira Oval tomorrow, while Shellharbour City Suns will host the Wollongong Bulldogs at Jock Brown Oval.
Both of last year’s reserve grade grand finalists have made the step up this season, with the Port Kembla Blacks playing host to Figtree Kangaroos at Kully Bay Oval, while the Albatross Demons have the bye first up.
