Magpies skipper Kerry Penfold won the toss and batted first, but missed out for the second time this season against Basin after he was out for 2.
There were a couple of starts in the Magpies top order with Brad Carey (36) and Glenn Brandon (23) keeping the scoreboard ticking over, but no one was able to go on and make a big score.
The Magpies had a bit of a rough patch in the middle order and were in a spot of bother at 7/98 before Ty Cherry came to the crease.
Cherry blasted four fours and two sixes on his way to 61, sharing a handy 81-run stand for the eight wicket with newcomer Bryce Taylor (22 not out).
The Magpies made the declaration at 8/182, with about 30 minutes left in the day, but they did not get the chance to try for some early wickets after a few drops of rain brought play to an early close.
