A 76-run partnership between Nowra’s Rohan Hutchinson and Chris Nation clinched the Shoalhaven District Cricket Association one- day final for their team in a thrilling match on Sunday at Bernie Regan Sporting Complex.
Berry looked to have the game in the bag after the 16th over, with Nowra on 7/28, chasing 122 and Hutchison at the crease.
Enter Chris Nation, who stealthily made his way to 46 runs in his 24 overs which included six fours.
In the 40th over Berry’s Glenn Brandon seemed to put his team back in with a fighting chance, with a quick two wickets leaving just Hutchison and Justin Weller to make eight runs off the last two overs.
While other number 11s would be content with blocking it out and leaving the scoring to the seasoned batsmen, Weller had other ideas.
In the second last over Weller hit a six and nearly lost the ball to tie the teams and put Nowra just one run from victory.
With a clear head Hutchisson hit the winning run, which finished him at 36 not out.
It was an extraordinary final for the Nowra captain, who was also named the man of the match.
In the second grade final Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen’s defeated Berry-Shoalhaven Heads by 48 runs.
In the third grade final, Berry claimed the win over Ex-Servicemen’s, with Nowra Green taking the win in fourth grade.
Full match reports of the games will appear in the South Coast Register later in the week.
