Inspector Sue Horton said police were out in force at public areas, licensed premises and campgrounds.
She said wherever people were gathered in large numbers police were there to stop things from getting out of hand, particularly where alcohol was involved.
“A number of young people had alcohol confiscated, and there were people who had to be moved on at various locations, so there were a lot of interactions with the police,” she said.
“There are always some people who require intervention which is always disappointing, but people were generally well behaved.
“We can’t always control what’s happening with people drinking in private homes.”
Insp Horton also said local police were very pleased that the Christmas/New Year period remained fatality free on the roads.
“We conducted a large number of random breath tests, and many tests during the day time which helped re-enforce home the message about not drinking and driving.
Among minor incidents police attended was an assault at Shoalhaven Heads which occurred at 10.30pm.

Also on New Year’s Eve, at Mollymook a fight between a 24-year-old man and a 30-year-old man was broken up by police.
Both sustained minor injuries with one of the men being taken to Milton Hospital for observation.
Police are investigating an assault that took place at Huskisson on the same night.
