THE success keeps coming for Nowra apprentice baker John Reminis.
Mr Reminis, along with two fellow apprentices from the Bakehouse Delights bakery in East Nowra, did battle in the regional WorldSkills Australia Competition in Wollongong.
Reminis took out gold in the bread making section and will now represent NSW at the Australian finals in Perth next year.
He will test his skills against the country’s best trainees and apprentices over three exciting days of competition.
If eligible, competitors from the national competition may be offered a position on the 2015 Team Australia Skillaroos, to compete as an Australian representative at the 43rd WorldSkills International Competition in Sao Paolo, Brazil.
It’s not the first time the third-year apprentice, who trains under his father, local baker John Reminis Senior, has made it to the national finals.
Two years ago he also qualified for the national event and narrowly finished with a silver medal after three days of baking.
It has proven to be a successful time for the local trio from Bakehouse Delights.
As well as John’s gold, Alex Ivanoff claimed silver in the pastry section while Matthew Moon finished fourth in the bread section.
Earlier in the year John Jnr was awarded the title of Australia’s best apprentice baker when he was named the 46th recipient of the industry’s highest accolade, the LA Judge Award as Baking Apprentice of the Year.
In September he teamed with another apprentice from Sydney to represent NSW at the Sydney Royal Fine Foods Show at Darling Harbour in a teams’ event claiming gold, while he also teamed with a Wollongong apprentice to claim gold at the Bake Skills Australia National Teams Competition.
That was a gruelling test of the skills and staying power of fledgling bakers and pastry chefs from across the country held over five days, where they produced a table full of themed baked goods across 26 categories.
John Reminis Snr said it has been a big year for his son.
“We are extremely proud of him and all our apprentices,” he said.
“They have all done a great job.
“They work as a team and are really pushing each other to achieve the best they can.”
