John Summerton started 200 radio in Wollongong, now i98FM, and then moved to 2ST in 1990 as its first general manager, later founding 94.9 Power FM.
Having worked in the industry for 48 years, Mr Summerton said he now wanted to travel around the world with his wife Anne-Maree and spend quality time with his daughter Abby, who is getting married soon.
“I’ve got mixed emotions about leaving,” Mr Summerton said.
“I love the industry and I’ve met a lot of really lovely people. There are some really interesting characters in radio.”
A farewell party was held for Mr Summerton at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre in Nowra on Thursday night with colleagues and dear friends celebrating his hard work over the years.
Colleague and good friend Nick Lowther said Mr Summerton had been a fantastic leader over the years, not a boss.
“Words that come to mind about John are honesty, loyalty, integrity and fun,” said Nick.
Drinks, canapes, heartfelt speeches and a comedian to entertain the guests made the night memorable.
