THE saying “it’s better to give than to receive” applies to Nowra Wrap with Love members and their many supporters.
A box kept at the Nowra Library always has knitted squares or donations of wool in it for the Wrap for Love cause.
Wrap for Love is all about giving less fortunate people some warmth with a handmade woollen wrap or other garment.
Co-ordinator of the Nowra Wrap with Love group Rae Watson is always pleased and touched when she collects the donations from the box kept in the library.
Mrs Watson said the people who donated to the cause didn’t seek recognition and just wanted to help people in need.
Wrap with Love began in 1992 with the aim of helping as many people as possible by providing them with warm wraps to ward off hypothermia.
In that time more than 255,322 wraps had been made and given to people in over 75 countries, including Australia, thanks to many hardworking and generous volunteers.
The Nowra Wrap with Love members and their supporters knit all year round but are preparing for their annual community knit-in, which will be held on Tuesday, August 7 in the Nowra Library.
The volunteers gather to knit squares that are used for the warm woollen wraps.
Mrs Watson said she hoped as many people as possible would attend and experience what is a vibrant and special community event.
“This year we are expecting 60 or more people to attend our knit-in.”
Laughter, along with the clicking of knitting needles, will be a constant sound at the event, which starts at 10am.
Last year the nimble knitters dispatched 390 wraps, 153 baby jackets and 114 baby caps.
This year 191 wraps have already been sent to over 60 countries including Africa, the Philippines, Pakistan and Iraq, with many also sent to Australian families.
