At 18 years of age John junior, the son of John Reminis, the well known local baker who owns the award-winning Bakehouse Delights in East Nowra is already a star.
On Saturday night, he was named Baking Associations of Australia Apprentice Baker of the Year.
It topped his previous accolade, a silver medal at the World Skills Competition, but the icing on the cake was still to come.
Later that evening in front of the industry’s biggest names and finest apprentices, young Mr Reminis was announced as the NSW nominee in Australasia’s most prestigious baking event, the LA Judge Award.
The LA Judge Award is a national event which recognises the best young baking apprentices in Australasia.
Competitors enter as either an Australian state or New Zealand representative.
The young bakers’ skills are evaluated in practical baking, technical knowledge and communication abilities over a three-day competition.
“It was the biggest baking awards dinner in NSW and after that announcement I was bombarded by congratulations,” Mr Reminis said.
“Winning apprentice of the year is great, and being nominated in the LA Judge Award is fantastic but I am a bit nervous about it.
“Next week I am meeting with the president of the Baking Associations of Australia to work out a plan leading up to the award,” he said.
Mr Reminis said the hardest thing about being a baker was the hours and encouraged other young apprentices to hang in there and work hard.
He said it was because of the long hours that having a passion for baking was important.
“This is my career and I love it,” he said.
“One day I hope to run my own bakery but at the moment I’m enjoying the competitions, I like the atmosphere,” he said.
John Reminis senior was proud of his son’s achievements and thrilled he will represent NSW in the LA Judge Award.
“It’s the who’s who of the industry, it’s a big deal. He will present two papers and bake for a day and a half.
“It has been about 15 years since NSW has won the award.
“This might sound biased but he’s the best young bloke I’ve ever worked with and I’ve worked with a lot,” Mr Reminis said.
