Comberton House was built by John Terry Hughes in 1843, using convict labour and bricks made by convicts.
The home remained in good condition and was listed on the National Trust’s register in 1981, but in 1989 when the home was owned by Shoalhaven City Council, it caught fire.
Only the chimney and a few walls were left standing, and in 1996 the draft local environment plan identified the ruins as being a heritage item of local significance.
However bricks were already being steadily removed from the site.
The bricks were removed between 1990 and 2006, and in March 2006 the convict-made bricks were sold in the council clearance auction.
Council authorised Comberton Grange’s sale two months later.
