An announcement for new referees to take the field has been put out by the Shoalhaven District Cricket Umpires Association (SDCUA), in the wake of dwindling numbers in the past season.
Secretary of the SDCUA, Terry Richmond said the comp is in desperate need to increase their referees on hand, with players quite often having to step in last season.
"We had about 20 on our books last season but many were also players," Richmond said.
"This meant that we actually only had about six full time...we really want to boost the numbers so we can cover more games."
With a set of new rules apparently being implemented later this year, Richmond said he wants to start training the referees up as soon as possible to get them up to speed.
Richmond said the group is targeting former players who have retired from the game but would still like to be involved in some capacity and give back to the game.
"Honestly it's a great way for people to make a spare bit of cash, we are really looking at anyone who's over 16, male or female," he said.
Becoming a referee can be just be the start Richmond said, as it can lead to many more opportunities down the track for those who wish to get involved.
"You can be appointed to the country panel which can lead to refereeing NSW matches as well as ICC competition," he said.
"It's a very rewarding occupation and honestly you can't be in a better position to watch the game."
