The Meals Together program will continue to provide the Shoalhaven with nutritious meals, but will also aim to address social isolation by bringing volunteers and clients together.
Manager of North Shoalhaven Heads Meals on Wheels Angela Pendlebury said the initiative aimed to overcome challenges associated with the pandemic.
"The past two years have been extremely challenging for many members of our community," she said.
"Meals Together aims to better engage and support these members of our community."
The new project will provide clients with services such as meal preparation, one-on-one lunches and social events that will better connect members across the community.
Volunteer Rosemary Courtney said it was about bringing people together.
"Simple connections can mean so much for people, sharing a meal can make someone's week," Ms Courtney said.
The service came about in response to clients requesting further assistance. For many a task such as heating up a meal can at times be too much.
'Hot Wheels' which is a new part of the service, addresses this issue, with volunteers helping to heat and prepare meals for the client.
North Shoalhaven Meals on Wheels is made up of 350 volunteers who provide meals seven days a week to 300 clients across the Shoalhaven.
A common sentiment shared by the volunteers was the relief that comes with knowing someone is checking up on your loved one especially for families who live too far away to regularly do so.
"Drivers will go the extra mile and leave feedback with the company if they notice any changes in a client's behaviour. The highlighting of any cautions means we can adjust to how we can best help that individual," Ms Courtney said.
All meals are carefully designed to cater to the nutritional needs of the elderly clientele and made using the exact same method to ensure meals are both healthy and nutritious.
While the North Shoalhaven team is strong, Ms Pendlebury was quick to highlight that new volunteers would provide much-needed additional support.
"Any additional support we receive is most welcome. We are calling on members of the Shoalhaven community to be a part of the Meals Together program and support others across our region," Ms Pendlebury said.
"It's meals with heart. At the end of the day it's locals helping locals," added Ms Courtney.
