And during a pandemic, coupled with lockdown restrictions - the birthday magic may be a little harder to come by.

But Culburra's Claire Merivale, who turned 11-years-old on Monday, had her day made by locals when her father, Scott Merivale, put a call out on a community Facebook page.

He asked residents who happened to be driving passed their home to give Claire a "shout out" by beeping their horns to make her day a little more special.

And the Culburra community didn't disappoint!

Claire, who usually spends her birthday "surrounded by family", reported that she was thrilled to hear people honking their horns all day, with two strangers kindly dropping off gifts in the front yard.

"Someone that we didn't know came around and dropped off a gift because they saw the message my Dad put up," said Claire.

"I felt really happy and excited."

Claire also spent the day eating ice cream for lunch and cake for dinner. Her favourite gift she received is her new friend, Roxy the bearded dragon.

"I decorated a cake that I made. It was a vanilla cake with pink and yellow icing that was blended with wafers on the border," Claire added when telling the Register how she spent her lockdown birthday.
