After a challenging couple of years of bushfire, flood and global pandemic, the long-running village festival was shaping up to be a celebration fitting of its 10-year history of live original music, film, surfing, skateboarding, food, art plus so much more.
However, with current COVID-19 health restrictions continuing across regional NSW and ongoing lockdown orders in Greater Sydney, the festival's board, organising committee and team of volunteer organisers have made the difficult decision to officially cancel the event in its current format.
"Right now, protecting our community and keeping everyone safe is more important than trying to press on with the event as planned," Alex McNeilly, Chair of the Board and Organising Committee, said.
"It's been a tough few years, and we want this event to bring community together, open our doors to visitors and give everyone something to celebrate - now more than ever.
"The decision to postpone again for 2021 has brought us much sadness after months or event planning. Given the current climate of uncertainty, the safety and wellbeing of our close-knit Culburra Beach village community is paramount.
"We just need to continue the waiting game until the pandemic is under control and health restrictions ease."
But the news comes with a touch of optimism, with organisers currently considering a series of smaller, COVID-safe micro-events under the umbrella of 'Burradise Live'.
"This year we were already looking at a new date to coincide with the start of spring school holidays and we are hoping to still be able to provide our community with a program of local events, live music, surf comps, food and art shows that extends throughout the summer holiday period," Alex said.
"Our mission in this festival over the past decade has always been to support local artists, celebrate our coastal lifestyle, and bring community together, so we are still committed to doing this in a more controlled and safe way."
