Basketball NSW, in conjunction with the state government, recently announced the new program, which will see Shoalhaven's Rachel Martin, Darcy Martin, Amanda Volpatti, Rebecca Clayton, Nikki Morris and Maddie Hanlon take part from July 2021 to June 2022.
The 'I am a Girl program, which is part of the 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup legacy program, is offered free to selected female players, coaches, referees, statisticians, scoretable officials, team managers, and administrators - designed to encourage and inspire women and girls right across NSW.
It aims to provide additional education and specialised training to develop skills in basketball, teamwork, interpersonal skills, knowledge of the game as a whole and in their area of interest.
After the program, all participants will be involved in a community project of their choice.
They impart their newly gained skills and experiences and inspire the next generation of basketballers to achieve greatness, to ensure the legacy continues.
Basketball NSW chief executive officer Maria Norstrom said she is excited to work with the state government in creating more opportunities for females in basketball and support girls that aspire to be involved within the sport.
"The 'I am a Girl' leadership scholarship program is one of the first of its kind within basketball as it will cover a number of areas including youth leadership programs looking at the retention of girls in our game, leadership capabilities within our community and encouragement of professional development and basketball programs for women and girls who love to play," Nordstrom said.
"We are very excited to offer these free scholarships to all females within our community to help build and support growth and development in a number of key areas such as leadership and specialised training."
The program's topics include leadership, career pathways, education, wellness and media and will involve up to eight online education sessions, including access to guest speakers from a variety of topics and backgrounds, as well as connecting with, and being a part of an inclusive network of like-minded individuals who are committed to empowering women and girls to achieve.
