Edwards' time of 3:33.23 at The Louis II Stadium saw him finish the race, featuring a majority of the Olympic Games' top gold medal hopes in 12th.
Kenya's reigning world champion Timothy Cheruiyot, who won't be at Tokyo after finishing fourth at his country's trials, won the event in a time of 3:28.28 - which was both a personal best and world-leading time.
Spain's Mohamed Katir (3:28.76) and Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen (3:29.25) finished second and third respectively, while fellow green and gold star Stewart McSweyn, who recently pipped Edwards for line honours at Monaco, claimed fourth in an Australian record time of 3:29.51.
Former Warilla High School student Edwards will now continue his training in Europe before heading to the Japanese capital next week for his maiden Games appearance.
