Floyd, a beautiful 2.5 year-old Great Dane cross was born at the shelter but was soon rehomed. Sadly, his family could no longer take care of him and he found himself back in the shelter in January.
After six months he still hadn't found a home - until now.
Mhairi Hodgson and husband Lance Hodgson from Shell Cove have welcomed the loveable lad in their home and he's already healing their hearts after the loss of their beloved Labradors.
With no children of their own, Mhairi said the rescue labs were 'their children, their whole world' but after nine years both sadly had to be put down after cancer struck.
The pair put off adopting another dog for a while, not believing they would be able to love another the way they loved their beautiful pair.
But on June 22, a Facebook post of Floyd caught Mhairi's eye. A few scrolls and one visit to the shelter later, and Floyd captured the couple's hear on June 26.
"He has certainly brightened our world and we are so lucky to have him. There hasn't been a day where he hasn't made us smile or laugh with his antics and unconditional love," Mhairi said.
"On the way home we called into pet barn at Shellharbour as Floyd was lucky enough to have been donated a $200 voucher to help buy him things he would need.
"It was a special afternoon as we were trying to pick a bed and he is such a big dog we wanted to get the very best bed for him I had pulled a few out looking at the size of them and if he would like them. Floyd went along and picked his own bed and we let him pick out his own toys."
They also thanked Amanda from All Natural Home Made Dog Treats and Leish O'Connor from Frankies Coffee van for their donations.
The shelter filled the couple in of all of Floyd's quirks. He's not a fan of children, cars, things with wheels and needs a cytopoint injection every month.
Fortunately, the couple were familiar with the cost of the cytopoint injections from one of their other dogs and weren't deterred.
The couple has been overwhelmed by the amount of love and support for Floyd. The Shoalhaven Animal Shelter Facebook page received more than 200 comments of joy after they revealed the long-term resident had finally been adopted.
Mhairi said Floyd has settled in immediately, loves his daily walks, new toys and has the run of the house.
The couple encouraged everyone to adopt rather than shop.
"We have had other rescue dogs before and there is something special about being able to give them another chance at life and with a loving and caring home," she said.
"We are so thankful that we are the lucky ones that get to be his forever home and his family."
